Apparently 23rd December is peak food shopping day – if you’re out there today, best of luck. And if you need some emergency beauty gifts, here’s some things you can wedge into the trolley between the turkey and the brandy butter.

Waitrose has the best selection of beauty products of the supermarkets. My local branch has brands like Neal’s Yard, Balance Me and Burt’s Bees on their shelves, both in the gifts section and the toiletries aisle. I’d pick up something like this Neal’s Yard Relax gift set of shower gel and body lotion, £16, (you might feel like you need this yourself after wheeling an overstuffed trolley round), or a lip balm from Burt’s Bees, £3.69 or Lanolips, £10.99. I also like the own-brand Senspa range – the nourishing body wash was £1.99 when I was last in store.

If you’re heading to Sainsbury’s, the Mandara Spa range from the same stable as Elemis, is your best bet. I really liked the Honeymilk Dream Conditioning Shower Cream, £4, but the whole range is great value and very nicely put together.

From the other supermarkets, I’d probably be looking at stocking fillers from Baylis & Harding for liquid soaps, Neutrogena for hand creams and body lotions, and Dove for shower creams.
