I’m lucky enough to be in a position where I can bring a great but little-known product or a miracle ingredient some wider attention. In the 1930s, a Dr. Haller, medical director at Vichy’s thermal treatment centre, recognised the multiple properties of the water on the skin, and about eighty years later I belatedly – in fairness, I wasn’t around during the Roman Republic – discovered the benefits for myself when handed a bottle of Vichy Aqualia Thermal Serum.
Alongside the Mineralizing Water (which pootles about some 4000 metres underground, picking up some fifteen minerals on the way before surfacing), the Aqualia range contains active ingredients designed to maximise the skin’s retention of water, including hyaluronic acid. Products that promise to hydrate can’t create water out of nowhere, but a good one will effectively hold on to what’s already there, and in the case of hyaluronic acid it will hold many times its own weight in water, leaving skin feeling smooth and plump.
Here I should reiterate a distinction it seems I can’t make enough – even though they may coincide, dry and dehydrated skin are two very different things. Dry skin needs the emollient qualities of a rich cream or oil, while dehydrated skin needs to retain as much water as possible.
In my case, my skin isn’t just thirsty, it’s routinely, as the saying goes, spitting feathers, and so I’m keen to try any hydrating product that crosses my path.
