My mother came to visit me a few weeks ago and we got to have some fun playing with makeup. She had some great questions, so I figured what better way to address them than in a blog!

Brown Eye Steppes

One of her biggest questions was to shimmer or not to shimmer. The answer is that shimmer can be your best friend when used in moderation. Using shimmer is the perfect way to reflect light and blur away imperfections, but a little goes a long way, so apply in sheer layers. You can always add more! Shimmer in a neutral shade on the inside of your eye can make you look awake and refreshed. A great shimmer duo that offers both a crease shade and a neutral color for your inner eye is Oyster/Supernova. Apply Supernova to your crease and outer third of the lid using the Crease brush and Oyster on your brow bone and inner lid using the Deluxe Shader brush.JustKissed Lip & Cheek Stain

Here’s another popular question: What if I have drooping eyelids? Don’t be discouraged, this is an easy fix with eye makeup. Close your eye and take a look in the mirror. Instead of splitting your eye into three sections (lid, bone and crease) get creative! What do you want to hide and what do you want to play up? Remember that light colors (and shimmer) give the illusion of protrusion where darker colors (and matte finish) give the illusion of recession. Using the example of my mother, she has fantastic eyebrows and a strong brow bone, yet her lid droops on the outer part of her eyes, which makes her self conscious. Using goBrown Eye Steppes, because she has beautiful deep chocolate brown eyes, we applied the lightest shade on her brow bone and the very inner part of her eye. Then we split her eye lid in half, applying Tan on the inner half of her eyelid and Licorice on the outer half. By using the Licorice on the outer half of her eyelid we diminished the look of droopiness because of the illusion given by darker colors. Licorice also contains some shimmer, which allows the natural light to reflect off and diminish the appearance of droopiness. She was astounded at how quickly we fixed the droopy eyelid with just a little makeup!

Lastly, eyeliner; there are a couple of main points to keep in mind when using eyeliner:

  1. To lift the eyes and look more awake, line the top lash line only. If you are going to line both your top and bottom lash lines be sure that your bottom lash line is thinner than the top .
  2. When applying eyeliner on your bottom lash line, apply it from the outside of your eye to just past the center of your pupil, this will allow your eyes to appear awake and open.
  3. Experiment with color! While you may be used to using basic black eyeliner, as we mature this can be unforgiving. Try using browns such as Dark Topaz and Citrine Mystikol to replace harsher black eyeliners. Also, play with color! Amethyst and Malachite Mystikol’s can truly brighten up your eyes and bring sparkle to them.

The most important rule is that there are no rules. We are each different and as we age our appearance changes, so don’t get stuck in a rut! Play with your makeup and find what ways best compliment you, bringing out your gorgeous natural self.
