The playwright and Dr Who, Monroe and Friday Night Dinner actress is a self-confessed beauty maven. Here, she spills out the contents of her make-up bag
Nearly 20 years of sitting in a make up chair, using a plethora of potions across all brands and watching myself in the mirror has made me hyper aware of what products I can and can’t use, what can enhance and what can detract. And most importantly, I’ve learned what can cause a flare up. My skin is so sensitive that you only have to show it the wrong product and it breaks out into a red rash. I find most products are too ‘active’, so I have to be very careful about what I put on my face. So here goes my list of favourite beauty products that are tried, tested and loved…
Laura Mercier Foundation Primer Hydrating, £28
I use a specially made cleanser from my dermatologist that uses hyaluronic acid to curtail the roseacea that broke out when I had my daughter. I find using it religiously (minus any moisturiser unless absolutely necessary) has altered the pH balance in my skin and kept it in really good check. If I need a boost under screen make-up I use this primer.
L’Oreal Paris Dermo-Expertise Gentle Eye Make-up Remover, £1.99
I’ve used this eye make remover for years and years. It’s brilliantly effective but gentle and not irritating.
Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream SPF30, £28
I like mineral make up if possible as it sits on the skin better, doesn’t clog pores and I truly believe makes skin age better. Laura Mercier and Bare Minerals do really good ones.
However, if I’m looking tired and blotchy I’ve discovered this Clinique CC cream can work wonders. Garnier do a great BB cream too, for under the minerals.
Superdrug Vitamin E Radiance Moisture Cream, £2.99
This is a lovely illuminating moisturiser, which is also really good to use as a primer base, or for added glow on cheekbones.
Bobbi Brown makes the best eyeshadows in my experience, and the packaging is always exceptional. I have three limited edition palettes that I’ve kept for years and they’ve travelled the world with me. They’re neutral and not too shimmery and they never drop onto cheekbones.
Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill Mascaras, £24.50
I’ve hunted for years for the best mascara and I firmly believe that Armani takes the prize. All their mascaras are excellent. They don’t clog or smudge. Pricey but a good investment, as they last months and months without drying out.
Clinique Quickliner For Eyes Intense, £15
The best eyeliner pencils are by Clinique. I have them in every colour. They’re creamy enough to blend, intense in colour and long lasting. I thoroughly recommend them.
Laura Mercier Undercover Pot, £29
Two concealers – one for under the eyes and another for blemishes – in a little pot with powder to set it. It’s a really useful product for nights out as it touches up foundation, blemishes and dark circles, and the powder illuminates too.
Sali Hughes told me a few years ago that pink blusher was wrong for me, and having taken a long look at myself, I realised that was a totally correct observation. The pinky milkmaid blush I longed for was looking hard and a bit ‘flushed with alcohol’, so I chucked them all out and started wearing coral tones. I like this or Bobbi Brown’s Rouge Pot in Calypso Coral.
I still swear by Armani – both the lipgloss and long lasting varieties are excellent. They have tough staying powder without ever drying out lips. However, Mac’s Ruby Woo has seen me through this last year. I’ve worn it pretty much every single day.
MAC Face & Body Foundation, £21.50
This product is genius at giving a sheen and even tone on legs arms and décolletage. I use it a lot if I have to show skin on stage. You just stroke it on and blend with fingers – though all my beloved brushes are by MAC too.
Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronze Universel, £31
This bronzing soufflé is brilliant for shading and contouring. It’s not too orangey or brick toned and it gives a subtle, healthy glow.
Aromatherapy Associates Bath Oils, £25.65
My super brand of choice is Aromatherapy Associates and I treat myself to their bath oils whenever I can. I especially love the Support Breathe Oil. The drops make me sleep well at night and all the bath oils can be used in the shower too. The smells are heavenly.
Perfume-wise, I’ve used Molecule 01 for years as it picks up on the body’s own pheromones and creates a unique scent. But I always keep a Jo Malone Red Roses in my bag and I recently invested in the Zadig and Voltaire fragrance. It’s intense and a little strange but I love it.
Louise Galvin Deep Conditioning Treatment, £10.98
My thick, huge, overdried hair – prone to looking like a horse’s mane, is treated to this treatment once a week to keep it soft.
