The posh lipstick category just got bigger. We assess Bobbi Brown’s contribution.
We can probably blame Mr Tom Ford for the rise of the Luxury lipsticks. His weighty, spendy, clicky tubes of creamy, high-pigment lip colours broke the £30 price barrier upon launch, and sparked a whole new category in beauty. Poppy King Lipstick Queen pushed the envelope further with the beautiful Velvet Rope (and later, Silver Screen) range of dense, creamy lipsticks encased in heavy metal Art Deco skyscraper packaging. Since then, we’ve had Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy, Nars Audacious (both fantastic) and now we have Bobbi Brown’s first upper class offering, Luxe Lip. This range of 24 shades (plus an extra six available exclusively at Selfridges for the next six months) is cheaper than the competition, at £25 (so roughly the same as a Chanel or Dior), but more expensive than Bobbi’s signature shades. What are you getting for the extra cash? A creamier formula, not dissimilar to Estee Lauder’s Pure Color Envy, but with the same great staying power as Bobbi’s original lipsticks (I recently wore the Luxe Lip in Atomic Orange to dinner, and it completely withstood three courses and about nine petit-fours. Ahem). The packaging, quite rightly, is posher – gold, heavy, with a satisfying click. But best of all are the colours. They are just cooler, more sumptuous, more special than the wearable spectrum of neutrals in the main range. I can’t pick a favourite, but I will give special mention to the aforementioned Atomic Orange (a perfect true tangerine), Pink Nude (a characteristically wonderful neutral), Retro Red (exactly as it suggests, and wonderful with black eyeliner and falsies) and Your Majesty, a rich, velvety, deep red inspired by Bobbi’s love of the British Monarchy. These lipsticks aren’t going to change the world, but they are mighty lovely and if you’re already a Bobbi fan, bound to bring great cheer. Out now and I’m told, selling fast.
