Guerlain Cils D'Enfer

Take the rest of your lives off, Guerlain. You have literally struck gold.

I’ve wanted to write about Guerlain Cils D’Enfer mascara since I first tried it eight weeks ago. For someone who is permanently dissatisfied with the quality of most mascaras, I can say with complete sincerity that it is one of the greatest I’ve ever tried. This is emphatically not for fans of the natural look (try Clinique’s Naturally Glossy Mascara if that’s your bag). Cils D’Enfer gives full, long, dramatic lashes that are perfectly separated without feeling spiky to the touch. It’s become my go-to when I’m not wearing lash extensions and feel sparse and piggy. And it doesn’t smudge! Even against the creamiest eye cream, this stays in place without cracking, flaking or smearing – though for a long night out I apply a topcoat of my beloved Estee Lauder Doublewear (my signature trick) to add an extra blanket of security.

With all this goodness, it’s almost redundant to point out what is without a doubt, the loveliest packaging of any mascara on the market. The sturdy, silky gold tube is a work of art – more like a luxury lipstick casing than the bland, plasticky tubes of many of its competitors. This is a mascara one can pull out of a clutch and feel like Alexis Carrington-Colby about to light a Sobrani. I suddenly feel sad for all other mascaras.
