High level of sun protection? Check. Pure anti-ageing Retinol? Check. I just never thought I could have both in one tube. Now you can too.
It is well documented that when it comes to anti ageing skincare, my two must-have, non negotiable, you-will-need-to-prise-them-from-my-cold-dead-hands products are retinol and a high broad-spectrum SPF facial sunscreen. The latter is the only practical way to protect skin from the skin damaging and prematurely ageing effects of sun exposure, while the former is among the only proven treatments for skin that’s already suffered its wear and tear. Each is utterly essential in my routine but until now, it’s been a case of Never The Twain Shall Meet. Due to the increased sensitivity of some skins after using retinol, most of us needed to layer our sunscreens over our anti ageing products, or even reserve retinol use for bedtime only, reducing their potential effectiveness.
Enter La Roche-Posay Redermic R Corrective UV SPF30, a creamy serum designed to tick both boxes, available in Boots and e-retailers from now. This new daytime version of the excellent Redermic R has the same combination of pure and progressive release 0.3% pure retinol as its big sister, only with added longlasting sun protection. As one should demand from any sunscreen, the SPF here is broad spectrum, meaning that it protects against both UVB rays (most commonly responsible for burning and over production of melanin, resulting in hyperpigmentations and other discolouration) and UVA (more usually associated with wrinkles and a loss of firmness), as well as the signature La Roche-Posay Anthelios anti-pollution anti-oxidants (guarding against tobacco smoke and other airborne nasties). Critically for beauty lovers, these filters have high photo-stability, meaning they’ll keep on doing their job beneath makeup.
For my purposes, the texture here is spot-on. There’s no peeling or bobbling when blending makeup over the top (the bane of my life when testing sunscreens), no greasiness but enough moisture to wear alone. On very dry skins, one can layer Redermic with day cream, but I personally haven’t felt the need – Redermic R Corrective UV SPF30 is rich and comfortable enough to allow me to proceed directly to CC cream or foundation, and I suspect the vast majority of women will find the same. It doesn’t clog or shine as the day progresses and like the classic Anthelios sunscreens, acts as a good base should you wish to skip a dedicated primer. Most importantly, I’ve experienced no irritation, redness or discomfort at all – even when I tap it around my eyes, though less hardened retinol users may wish to avoid the area, at least at first.
My love of La Roche-Posay Retinols and Anthelios sunscreens is already known, as is that of dermatologists, 9/10 of whom would also recommend the brand. I’ve been using Redermic R Corrective SPF30 religiously for just under a fortnight, including many long, lazy days on my local beach, and although it’s still too soon to comment on its longer term effects, I can certainly say that I’ve experienced no breakouts, greasiness or sensitivity, only increased softness and great protection. I’m completely won over, but I’d love you to try it for yourself. We have 100 full sized tubes of the new Redermic R Corrective SPF30 (RRP £29.50) to give away. Just enter via the forum, here. Winners will be chosen via a random numbers generator on 27th September 2016 and contacted via private message. You should receive your free sample within 28 days of our receiving your home address. Good luck!
