The spring makeup trends were (mostly) innovative and unexpected this year. While barely there makeup and lip gloss always feel fresh and appropriate as we come out from winter hibernation, there were some really bold ideas out there. Here are some of our favorites, as well as toned down versions (when possible).
Orange Lips
Apparently, orange is not only the new black, but also the new red. Bright orange lips are everywhere!
Go strong: pair a bright orange lip with a bold black cat eye for a fierce boss-lady look.
- Start with really beautiful skin. If your skin is still winter parched, begin with Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener. If you are oily, start with Absence Oil Control Primer. Apply your favorite foundation, but I recommend fuller coverage if you have it, like Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder or Glow Time BB Cream.
- Groom your brows.
- Start with the lips, because you can adapt the rest of the look to how this bold shade looks on you. Make sure they are soft and smooth by exfoliating and moisturizing first, if needed, with Sugar&Butter Lip Exfoliator/Plumper. Anchor the color by lining and filling the lips with Peach Lip Pencil. Generously swipe Liz PureMoist Lipstick on top.
- Blend a single champagne eye shadow from lashes towards just above the crease, letting it fade out there. Try the lightest shade from the new Golden Girl PurePressed Eye Shadow Triple, or Champagne Eye Gloss.
- Trace very close to the upper lash line using the Bent Liner Brush and Black Jelly Jar Gel Eyeliner. I work from the outer corner, about 3/4 of the way in. Get it right into the lash line. Then reverse direction and thicken the line , winging it as you go out. How you do it is entirely up to you: you can keep it fairly thin, or cover most of the lid if you like. You can flick your cat eye way up for that classic Mad Men look, or my favorite new look, angle it pretty much straight out to the side, just a little bit past your outer corner for a cool 70s disco vibe.
- Line the inner rim of the eye with White Eye Pencil.
- Add PureLash Lash Extender & Conditioner and lots of black mascara to the upper lashes only, concentrating on the lashes at the outer corner.
- Finish with a sculpted cheek: apply PurePressed Blush in a matte shade like Dubonnet along the cheekbone, just beneath it, using the White Fan Brush. Begin with a light touch and layer as needed.
Go soft: sheer melon on the lips plus a peachy glow and softly defined eyes look fresh and lovely.
- Start with your primer if desired, and then your foundation. Sheer, medium, or full coverage is fine for this look, so pick your favorite.
- Blush comes next: blend a warm, peachy shade with some shimmer into the apples of the cheeks (smile! There they are). Try Whisper PurePressed Blush or Connection In Touch Cream Blush.
- Follow step 4 above.
- Follow the fist eyeliner step above, lining into and just above the upper lashes.
- Follow steps 6 & 7 above, placing emphasis on the center lashes.
- Apply Craze Lip Fixation, first the stain end, then after 30 seconds, top with the gloss.
Inky Eyes
This is a personal favorite of mine. I love black liner, the more the better. This is a bit unkempt and edgy. It’s for your rocker mood, and there is no soft version.
- Begin with your favorite foundation. I use Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener and Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder for winter skin, which I will have till June.
- This is all about the eyes, so begin here. Pick a PurePressed Eyeshadow Triple that is fairly neutral but still has some oomph. I love Golden Girl and Sundown for this look. Press the medium shade on to the lid and into the crease with the Deluxe Shader Brush. Use the Eye Shader to press the darker shade along the upper lash line. You can extend this a bit out past the corner if you want.
- Now get busy with your Black Jelly Jar Gel Eyeliner and Bent Liner Brush. Draw the line around your lashes, upper and lower. I leave the part closest to the inner corner clean, it closes my eyes down if I completely circle my eyes, but I encourage you to experiment, I have seen this look great on some people. Be sure to wiggle it right into the base of the lashes, you want to get this super dark.
- Finish with PureLash Lash Extender & Conditioner and heaps of black mascara. Wiggle the wand down at the base of the lashes to deposit most of the mascara at the roots, then sweep it up and out through the lashes.
- The rest of the look is fairly neutral, so apply just enough blush to look alive, and a neutral lip on the matte-to-creamy (rather than glossy) side, such as Compulsion or Mania Lip Fixation (with no gloss) or Kaylee PureMoist Lip Stick.
