Miller Harris Feuilles de Tabac Shave Cream, £22

The ways of working up a good, beard-softening lather are many and varied. Like most young shavers of my generation, I embarked on my teenage shaving journey in the company of messy, spray-cream consistency foams. I graduated to oils – effective, though their lack of reassuring lather means a leap of faith for the nervous, nick-prone shaver, and they do rapidly clog up a razor. Latterly, I’ve discovered the third way (ok, fourth if you include old-school shaving sticks) and now it’s absolutely my shaving prep of choice. Feuilles de Tabac lathers up a treat, with a smooth satiny texture and rich, controlled foam those instant-whip spray spumes could only dream of. Factor in its warm, woody but not overbearing scent and Feuilles de Tabac cream makes for a shave a chap will actively look forward to.

If you reckon shaving-related Christmas gifts start and finish with plasticky, faux-Victorian brush and razor sets, reckon again.
