Christmas Candles
Ah, Christmas candles. Such a lovely idea, so tricky to get right. They either make you want to snuggle under a blanket with a cup of mulled wine, highlighting the Radio Times while you attempt the descant to ‘Oh Come All Ye Faithful’, or climb up your nose and punch your sinuses like the wrong end of the household cleaning aisle in the supermarket.
I’d fully intended today to write about Rituals’ winter limited edition Sacred Fire candle, which fills the room with a beautiful patchouli and cedar scent, but somehow word has got out and it seems to be sold out everywhere. If you see one, grab one – and tell me where you’ve found it, I’ve just about finished the three wick version and am desperate to restock.
While I wait for them to reappear, I’ll be burning the Diptyque christmas editions. The jars are especially beautiful this year, and I’m keen on Résine and Epices (less so on Hiver). They can be bought individually in standard or mini sizes, and as a set of three. Diptyque also do a limited edition set of five mini Winter fragrances – I got this last year and am just polishing off the last one. The throw from these tiny candles is amazing.
I also like The White Company’s Winter fragrance. I’ve got the diffuser in my hall, which has great throw and have one of the jar candles stashed away. It’s got a real spicy edge to it, which I’m fonder of than the traditional balsam note of many of the Christmas candles (although if you prefer this they also have a Pine Cone fragrance which is woodier).
Finally, I’ve bought several candles from Melt again this year, both for myself and as gifts. I spoke to candle maker Cheryl Hook last Christmas and as a reminder, her great advice on how to scent your home is here.
