LES BEIGES

Beauty’s great new love affair explained

I’ve rarely seen such collective lust among beauty lovers as for the debut release from Chanel’s new collection, Les Beiges. Healthy Glow Sheer Powder is the first product in a line devoted entirely to simple, natural, healthy-looking skin – a huge departure for a brand synonymous with chic and smart, one that’s rarely carefree and undone. If that weren’t subversive enough, Chanel has done the unthinkable with Les Beiges packaging – it’s dispensed with the iconic black lacquer and white monogrammed compact, replacing it with palest summer-trench beige embossed with black. The result is so completely, almost tear-jerkingly, fabulous that I do wonder whether some beauty fans have allowed their love for the casing to influence their opinion of the product within.

What Healthy Glow Sheer Powder is, is a beautifully textured, lighter than light pressed powder in seven flattering matte shades for caucasian and asian skins (I wear shade 10, the darkest is 70). It contains an SPF15, antioxidants and other skincare ingredients, and feels blissfully smooth on the skin. It certainly gives a healthy, glowy finish, though anyone wearing it alone needs to be content with a very light coverage (less even than a tinted moisturiser), or be minted enough to layer the coverage and buy a new one within a month or so of daily use. I’ve found the powder works best buffed with a brush over tinted moisturiser and concealer, or in a darker shade stroked along contour lines as a sort of pale girl’s bronzer. It’s Sunday in the park make-up for me, albeit in its most laughably extravagant incarnation. Do you need it? No, not unless you want only the merest hint of make-up. Do you want it? But of course you do. Just look at it for heaven’s sake.
