There were a number of eye shadow trends on the runway for spring: lids were on parade, from white, to pastel, to cobalt, to metallic. Fortunately, these trends are easy to translate into something very pretty and wearable, and also so easy to do! Here, we will tackle the ones that the majority of people would feel comfortable wearing at work or for an evening out. However, for the brave, please feel free to apply these techniques with crazy shades of blue, violet or white.
pastel lids
This is a classic look for spring. It reminds us of the delicate flowers and the soft blue sky of early spring and goes really nicely with softer pastel and neutral clothes. It is also very flattering on paler, winter-weary skin.
Start with any pastel shade of eye shadow, and it’s especially nice with a bit of shimmer. Please don’t get too stuck on what looks good with your eye color. I have green eyes, so common wisdom says lavender is my shade, and I do like that, but I tried this look with baby blue Caribbean and got so many compliments. This look is soft and forgiving so feel free to experiment! Some of our loveliest pastels include Caribbean, Peach Sherbet, Platinum and Nude. There are more, but I’ll leave that for you to explore.
- Apply your favorite foundation and blush. Try a matte or cream blush in a fresh shade, my choices would be Cheekie PurePressed Blush or Clarity In Touch Cream Blush.
- Use the Deluxe Shader to press the eye shadow onto the lid. Layer on a bit extra so it isn’t too subtle. Allow a bit of shadow to cover the inner corner of the eye and into the crease. Blend the edges so there are no hard lines.
- Line close to the upper lash line with your favorite liner in a neutral but substantial color like black or dark brown. You can use Eye Pencil, Liquid Eyeliner, Mystikol; I prefer Jelly Jar Gel Eyeliner in Black. The line can stay fairly thin for a simple look, or you can thicken it slightly just over the iris (a sort of rainbow line) for a wide, doe-eyed look; or wing it out for a classic cat eye. If you like, run a thin line under the outer part of your lower lashes. This is a very versatile look, so line how you prefer.
- Line the inner rim (waterline) with White Eye Pencil.
- Follow up with mascara. Since the lids are pale and shimmery, lashes stand out nicely against them. I prefer to downplay the eyeliner a bit and go heavy on the mascara. Wiggle PureLash Lash Extender & Conditioner into the base and sweep through the lashes to condition, prime and maximize volume. Follow with several coats of Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara in Black Ice. To accentuate the doe-eyed look, pull the mascara straight out through the lashes, and fan the little lashes towards the inner corner of the eye towards the bridge of the nose. If you did a cat-eye, pull the mascara through the lashes aiming towards the outer corner and do more coats on those outer lashes.
- Just neaten the brows with PureBrow Brow Gel or Bitty Brow Kit in your shade. The brows should remain soft and not too pronounced.
- A fresh lip looks lovely with this. I adore Forever Pink Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain, as it gives a dewy, hydrated finish, feels wonderful and gives you a vibrant yet soft hue that’s all your own. Or try a pretty PureGloss Lip Gloss like Pink Candy.
gilded lids
Usually this is something we see at holiday time, but metallics were everywhere this spring, even on brows. This look is always right at night, but there’s also a way to do it for day (did you see what I did there? A little poetry).
- Once again, begin with your favorite foundation and blush. Try a little highlighter along the tops of the cheekbones, like Comfort In Touch Highlighter.
- For daytime: press the gold (medium) or bronze (dark) shade from Golden Girl PurePressed Eye Shadow Triple into the lids. Add liner and mascara as above with pastel lids.
- For night: Begin with Eye Gloss in Champagne Silk or Brown Silk. Let dry most of the way. Press one of the above shades on top. Or if you really want to dazzle, try Gold or Bronze 24-Karat Gold Dust. Leave the brow bone clean.
- Line with dark brown and make it smoky. This is the easiest kind of lining because it’s messy by definition. Again, my favorite is Jelly Jar Gel Eyeliners, either Black or Brown. Draw a line close to the lashes from outer corner towards the inner, and then out, slightly thickening the line. Wrap it around the corner of the eye, and line under the lower lashes, picking up a bit more color if needed. Then wipe off the brush if necessary and keep running it over the line till it’s smudged and smoky. So sultry!
- Finish with mascara using the cat eye technique above.
- A sexy glossy lip looks great with this. Try Compulsion or Mania Lip Fixation, swiping straight from the tube, and top with the gloss.
That’s how we’re wearing the runway trends in real life. And while temperatures are still topping out at 25 degrees for us in the end of March, it seems like this might be the only change to our spring wardrobe we’ll be making for awhile. Thank you, makeup!
